Keep fit and enjoy the Stour Meadows nature reserve and river Stour
Opposite the skatepark at the road entrance to the Stour Meadows car park , the outdoor gym was designed by an athletics’ coach to provide and outdoor exercise circuit for all levels of fitness, including children under supervision. The design is endorsed by local athletes, including the Park Run group.
Blandford St Mary Parish Council own the facility. It was funded through a Tesco community grant obtained by the DT11 Community Partnership. Exercises are described on the board below.
Compliment your fitness regime with a walk (with or without a dog!), a cycle or a run or just an enjoyment of nature. Rotary Way alongside the river provides an all-weather path between the ‘blue’ and ‘black’ bridges. Otters are often seen along this route. Grass and vegetation are kept short for recreation in the western half of the meadows. Nature and the environment take priority in the eastern half. A natural pond hosts a wealth of wildlife including dragonflies, damselflies, kingfisher, heron and a wide variety of other wading and non wading birds, and beautiful meadow flora and fauna. Time it right and you will see spectacular sunrise and sunsets, amazing reflections of light and shadow only to be found by a river of the quality of the Stour. The meadows are a natural flood plain and can be underwater for long periods after extensive rain. See also ‘Stour Meadows Nature Reserve’.
The display board adjacent to the outdoor gym shows the start of two measured running loops – a 1 mile (mixed terrain) loop and a 1 kilometre (track) loop for those who want a firmer surface. National cycle routes 253 and 25 run past the outdoor gym.
